MLK Day to impact mail, banks and more: What to know

(NEXSTAR) – Monday, January 19, is the third Monday of the year, which means millions across the nation will be observing Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The federal holiday was established in 1983 when President Ronald Reagan signed into law a bill passed by Congress. This year will mark 40 years since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was first officially observed, according to the National Museum of African American History & Culture.

While not every company observes MLK Day, federal offices do. That includes the U.S. Postal Service, which will not make regular deliveries on Monday. Post offices will also be closed, but Priority Mail Express will still be operational.

You may not get any packages, either.

FedEx will operate under modified service, though its Office, Custom Critical, and Logistics services will be available.

UPS will not perform any pickup or delivery service on Monday, and only select stores will be open. UPS Express Critical will remain available, as it does on all holidays.

Banks will also close for MLK Day. Their ATMs and online services should still be accessible, however. Both the New York Stock Exchange and the NASDAQ will have the day off.

Other services in your community may be taking the day off, including garbage and recycling pickup, libraries, and schools.

Most other industries – stores, restaurants, entertainment spaces, parks, gyms, etc. – typically remain open on MLK Day.
