(NewsNation) — The former therapist of long-time hostage Jaycee Dugard has detailed how recently freed Hamas hostages may be feeling at this moment, and into the future.

Dr. Rebecca Bailey joined “Banfield” to discuss the mental process the former Hamas hostages will be going through following their release from captivity in Gaza.

Monday marked the completion of the first stage of the ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas as the remaining 20 living Israeli hostages held in Gaza were released.

It marked 738 days since the hostages were taken, and while it is a time for celebration among the wider public, Bailey believes the freed Israelis could the simplest of matters too much.

“I think we need to keep that in mind that in addition to the amazing joy that we’re all seeing and it’s so touching and beautiful, they’re also coming into a world that is very different than when they left, and that’s one of the common denominators.,” she said.

Bailey said Dugard, who was abducted at 11 years old and held captive for 18 years, and others, told her that “the most difficult thing” they were asked was a choice between a glass of water or tea.

“Just the fact that you don’t have those choices can be overwhelming,” she said of captivity. “And so many of us, in so many locations, wherever we live in this world, there’s so many choices. When you’re [back] in that situation, it really can feel overwhelming.”

Bailey also said it can be important for survivors to share their stories, but not for everyone.

“I think we need to remember that, front and center, the individual differences within people and within family members as well of what what people can handle hearing and what people can handle sharing.”
