Murder charge expected in death of sailor, mother says

(NewsNation) — The mother of a Navy sailor who was found dead this week in Norfolk, Virginia, said Friday military authorities have told her they are charging a detained suspect with her murder.

Angelia Resendiz, a 21-year-old culinary specialist seaman, was last seen May 29 at her barracks at Naval Station Norfolk. The sailor’s mother, Esmeralda Castle, said her daughter told a friend she was going to make tacos with a fellow sailor on the base before she vanished.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service has said another sailor was in pretrial confinement and that charges were pending but has released little information in the case, including Resendiz’s cause of death. This has proven frustrating to Castle, who joined “Banfield” on Friday with an update.

She said military authorities confirmed to her that they were charging the sailor in custody with murder. A hearing was scheduled for Monday; a judge will consider evidence and decide whether to keep the sailor in confinement, Castle said.

“They have the evidence that they need to show the judge that there’s probable cause that he committed the crime,” said Castle, who added military authorities did not share details with her.

She said she’ll participate in the hearing in hopes of keeping the sailor detained.

NewsNation is not naming the individual because no formal charges have been announced. “Banfield” has reached out to a Navy prosecutor to confirm the information.
