(NewsNation) — There have been 13 unexplained deaths across Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island since the start of the year, fueling rumors of a potential serial killer. But is this likely?

Investigators currently have no suspects, no clear cause and no evidence that any of the 13 deaths are connected. However, Dr. Michelle DuPre, a former medical examiner, police detective and author, told NewsNation the bodies could be connected.

“Thirteen bodies in a relatively small area… that’s too much of a coincidence,” DuPre said. “That’s a lot of bodies in a short period of time.” She did stress, though, that this doesn’t mean these individuals were all killed during the same time. They have just been found in the same time frame.

Most of the bodies found in New England were females

DuPre also touched on the fact that most of the bodies that have been found were females.

“We do know that most serial killers are male and most serial killers do target females,” she explained. “I think that that right there is a very good reason to suspect that they may be connected.”

She also said she believes the police might be holding back information on the causes of death for the bodies. “Even if it is skelitanized, we can still tell a lot about the body, and perhaps even how that person died.”

Police have continuously denied claims of a serial killer in the New England area. Connecticut State Police told Fox News Digital, “There is no information at this time suggesting any connection to similar remains discoveries, and there is also no known threat to the public at this time.”

The first victim was found on March 6, with the latest victim being found on June 1.
