(KTLA) — Most dog owners don’t like it when their pooches chew on items not meant for chewing on, but this takes that sentiment to a whole new level.
Officials with Ottawa Fire Services stated that the fire was reported around 9:07 a.m. local time in Orléans, a community located east of the city of Ottawa, Canada’s capital.
“Ottawa Fire Services Communications Division received a call from a monitoring company reporting an active fire alarm in a two-story, single-family home,” fire officials said. “The monitoring company advised they had spoken with the homeowner, who was en route to the residence and confirmed through interior security cameras that there was an active fire inside the home.”
Ottawa Fire Services noted that people who drove by the home also called 911 to report the flames.
Crews arrived at the scene about four minutes after being dispatched and confirmed heavy smoke and flames coming from a first-floor window. A “fast attack” was initiated, and firefighters advanced a hose line to quickly knock down the flames that had breached the bay-style window.
After entering the home, crews found an uninjured dog and carried it to safety. There were no people inside the home at the time. However, Ottawa Fire Service said that one adult and one child were displaced as a result of the fire.
Investigators later verified that the fire started when the dog began chewing on a glove that had a lithium-ion battery in it.
“It was confirmed through interior security camera footage provided by the homeowner that the family dog had grabbed a skiing glove equipped with a lithium-ion battery used for heating,” Ottawa Fire Services said. “The dog brought the glove onto a couch and began chewing it, damaging the battery.”
“The damaged lithium-ion battery subsequently failed and ignited, causing the fire,” Ottawa Fire Services continued.
Officials reminded residents to store items containing lithium-ion batteries safely, keeping them out of reach of children – and four-legged family members as well.
Should an item with a lithium-ion battery become damaged or show signs of malfunction or overheating, immediately stop using the device, officials also warned.
