(NewsNation) — An artificial intelligence program generated a police report falsely claiming a Utah police officer shape-shifted into a frog last month.

The Heber City Police Department began testing an AI-powered software called Draft One, which automatically generates police reports from body camera footage, according to KSTU-TV. The goal was to reduce paperwork, but the software misinterpreted background audio, requiring the department to correct the report and explain what happened.

“The body cam software and the AI report writing software picked up on the movie that was playing in the background, which happened to be ‘The Princess and the Frog,'” Sgt. Keel told KTSU. “That’s when we learned the importance of correcting these AI-generated reports.”

Despite the error, Keel told the outlet that the technology has saved him “six to eight hours” of work weekly.

The department also began testing another AI system, Code Four, which similarly generates police reports from body camera footage in an effort to reduce paperwork and keep officers in the field more.

Keel said the trial period for Code Four ends next month, but department officials plan to continue using the AI tools, though it remains unclear which system they’ll choose.

As law enforcement agencies expand their use of AI, including AI-driven tools that can alert detectives immediately as a crime is reported to dispatch and AI-enhanced cameras, some officials and experts urge caution.

Critics have warned of dangers, saying the practice could distort an already unreliable process for identifying suspects and face blowback in court. Others argue that AI-generated reports could introduce plausible deniability and weaken officer accountability.

A recent investigation by the Electronic Frontier Foundation found that Draft One appears “deliberately designed to avoid audits that could provide accountability to the public.”
