(NewsNation) — The Department of Homeland Security has been going door-to-door in Minnesota, investigating potential fraud and Republicans have called for investigations.

Many of the sites under scrutiny come from a viral YouTube video from Nick Shirley.

Who is Nick Shirley?

Shirley calls himself an independent journalist, though he does not have a background in journalism. The 23-year-old creates social media content with a conservative point of view.

Why is Shirley’s video trending?

The video claims to uncover new fraud in Minnesota, though some of the information had already been reported on previously by traditional media.

The video caught the attention of President Donald Trump, who shared it. FBI Director Kash Patel also said he is familiar with the video. Vice President JD Vance also praised Shirley’s work.

What does the Nick Shirley video reveal about alleged fraud in Minnesota?

In the video, Shirley visits a number of daycare centers, which he says are not operational despite receiving funds through a state program providing child care assistance to low-income families. Shirley said the centers were Somali-run, and he visited mid-day.

He did not specify what days he visited, however, and at least one center said the video was filmed on a day the center was scheduled to be closed.

Shirely also notes in the video when doors are locked or when he is not allowed inside. Many childcare centers keep doors locked and require a code for access to protect the children in their care, and may not allow filming due to the presence of children whose parents are not there to consent to them being filmed.

How is the Somali community connected to the Minnesota fraud investigation?

Minneapolis is home to a large Somali-American community, the majority of whom are U.S. citizens.

According to the U.S. attorney’s office, Somali Americans accounted for 82 of the 92 people already charged for defrauding social programs.

Trump has used the news to lash out at the Somali community in the U.S., stating he does not want them here and suggesting he may try to denaturalize and deport members of the community. His administration has already removed temporary protected status for Somali immigrants and has engaged in efforts to deport those without documents.

What is the background on the daycare fraud allegations?

The video comes amid investigations and charges against those who have defrauded various social services programs in Minnesota.

Local media had previously reported on fraud involving daycare centers, but the Trump administration has increasingly focused on the fraud.
