NEW YORK (PIX11) — Police officers rescued a boy who fell through ice on a Long Island pond on Christmas Day, the Suffolk County Police Department said.
Police received a 911 call for help around 1 p.m. on Thursday, according to authorities.
Police said an 8-year-old boy was playing on ice that had frozen over a pond behind the Heaterwood Lakeside Village apartment complex in East Patchogue when he fell through. He landed in water that was chest-deep and was unable to free himself, according to authorities.
A nearby resident noticed the boy in the water and called 911.
Officers James Rizzo and Andrew Tirello got into the freezing pond and threw a life ring to the boy, while Highway Sgt. Michael Santillo crossed the ice to reach him and pull him from the water, officials said.
The boy was taken to New York University Langone Hospital-Suffolk in Patchogue for evaluation. He is expected to recover, authorities said.
