Nick Reiner, the son of actor and director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, is expected to appear in court this week to face murder charges in connection with his parents’ stabbing deaths inside their Los Angeles home.
Court records indicated a preliminary appearance was scheduled for Tuesday at 8:30 a.m., but it did not occur.
NewsNation local affiliate KTLA’s Eric Spillman learned Tuesday that notable defense attorney Alan Jackson is now representing Reiner. Jackson spoke outside the downtown Los Angeles courthouse and explained why his client was not in court.
“Every inmate has to be medically cleared before they can be transported to court, and he has not been medically cleared. It’s just a procedural issue,” Jackson told Eric.
Jackson said he has not received any court filings and confirmed Reiner is being held at Men’s Central Jail. When asked if he had spoken to his client, Jackson declined to comment.
“I am not commenting any further than what the procedure of the court today is,” he said.
It’s unclear when Reiner will appear in court, but Jackson said they will be there “day to day.”
“The bailiff has indicated that the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department will take it on a day-by-day basis and, hopefully, he’ll be cleared tomorrow and we can get him here,” Jackson said.
Jackson, considered one of California’s top 100 lawyers, has represented Kevin Spacey, Karen Read, Harvey Weinstein and Naasón Joaquín García, the third leader of the La Luz del Mundo church.
Meanwhile, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman scheduled a news conference for 1 p.m. Tuesday to announce murder charges against Reiner. The 32-year-old is accused of fatally stabbing his parents in their Brentwood home over the weekend.
Police have not released details regarding the deaths. However, TMZ reported the couple “had their throats slit by a family member, possibly after an argument.”
Rob and Michele were found dead in their home around 4:40 p.m. Sunday. The couple was reportedly scheduled to get a massage at their mansion, but when the masseuse arrived and knocked, no one answered. The masseuse then called their daughter, Romy, who lives across the street. Various reports claim she went inside and discovered the grisly scene.
She immediately told police her brother Nick was dangerous and should be considered a suspect.
TMZ reported Rob, Michele and Nick were seen arguing at a party hosted by Conan O’Brien Saturday evening, and some guests claimed Nick was acting strangely, staring at people and appearing to be under the influence.
Sources told the outlet Nick checked into Santa Monica’s Pierside Hotel early Sunday morning. When staff entered his room later that day, they said the shower was full of blood, and blood was found on the bed.
Nick was arrested by police, with assistance from a U.S. Marshals task force, near the Expo/Vermont Metro Station in Exposition Park on Sunday evening, around 9:15 p.m. He was booked into the LAPD’s Jail Division on Monday at 5:04 a.m.
Photos released by the LAPD’s Gang and Narcotics Division show him being taken into custody. In one image, Nick is surrounded by a half-dozen law enforcement officers on the ground. In two others, he is handcuffed outside a patrol cruiser.
He’s been booked on suspicion of murder and is being held without bail. Initially, bail was set at $4 million.
Rob was 78, and Michele was 68. They had been married for 36 years and have three children together.
Both Rob and Nick were open about Nick’s battle with addiction, which inspired their 2015 movie “Being Charlie.” Rob even discussed it with KTLA’s Sam Rubin.
“One of the biggest problems I have with AA is the second A, which is the anonymous part,” Rob said. “To me, people who are struggling with substance abuse, whether it’s alcohol, drugs, whether it’s sex or gambling, whatever it is, they’re in pain. They’re using these drugs or alcohol as a way of self-medicating. They have problems. They have emotional problems.”
He stressed the importance of de-stigmatizing addiction by having conversations.
“I guarantee you there’s somebody in everybody’s family or sphere or good friend who is struggling with different issues. I have eating issues. Everybody has something, and to be able to talk about it openly, I think, is positive,” he continued. “I think ultimately, you talk about Republicans and Democrats, what’s the one issue we’re all in agreement on? That we have to approach this thing not as punitive, not punishing people, but helping people.”
