(NewsNation) — Jeremy O. Harris, known for playing Grégory Elliot Duprée in the Netflix series “Emily in Paris,” has been arrested in Japan.
Harris, a Tony-nominated producer, was stopped at Naha Airport on Okinawa Island on Nov. 16 and found to have 0.78 grams of crystal containing the synthetic narcotic MDMA in his tote bag, according to an Okinawa Regional Customs spokesperson.
He was arrested, and the process of filing criminal charges has already begun. An official with a police station in Tomigusuku city in southern Okinawa told Reuters that Harris remains in custody.
According to customs, Harris traveled to Okinawa from Britain, via Taiwan, for sightseeing purposes.
Japan has strict drug laws with severe penalties for possession and smuggling offences. The country has some of the toughest narcotics regulations among developed nations, with even small amounts of illegal substances resulting in criminal prosecution.
However, punishments are not as harsh as in other Asian countries such as China and Singapore, where drug offenders can face the death penalty.
