(NewsNation) — Nearly 82 million people are expected to travel for Thanksgiving this week, according to AAA. But for some, rain and wintry weather could make those plans harder.

The FAA said this year’s Thanksgiving travel period is expected to be the busiest in 15 years.

A storm that could hit most of the Great Plains, Midwest and Northeast is expected to bring lake-effect snow on Thanksgiving Day and through some of the extended weekend, according to AccuWeather. The heaviest snow could hit some parts of Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York.

On Tuesday, heavy rain hit the Pacific Northwest and parts of the eastern U.S., prompting air traffic control operations at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to temporarily shut down.

At Chicago’s O’Hare Airport, nearly 350 departing and arriving flights were delayed Tuesday afternoon. As of Wednesday morning, a ground stop was in effect at O’Hare until 11:45 a.m. local time due to snow and severe icing.

With heavy snow in the forecast, experts with the Weather Channel advised travelers to expect dangerous roads.
