(NewsNation) — Ukraine and the United States have agreed to a deal to end the four-year war with Russia, with some details still to be worked out, a U.S. official confirmed to NewsNation early Tuesday.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will head to Washington, D.C., to finalize the agreement at the “earliest suitable date” this month, Ukrainian national security adviser Rustem Umerov announced.
“Our delegations reached a common understanding on the core terms of the agreement discussed in Geneva,” Umerov said on social media.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said there were “a few delicate, but not insurmountable, details” left to work out — and they will require “further talks between Ukraine, Russia, and the United States.”
The news comes as U.S. officials, led by Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, continue to meet with Russian representatives in Abu Dhabi.
“The talks are going well, and we remain optimistic. Secretary Driscoll is closely synchronized with the White House and the U.S. interagency as these talks progress,” said Jeff Tolbert, a spokesperson for Driscoll.
The U.S. delegation has been at the table since Monday night, attempting to “achieve a lasting peace” through the Trump administration’s proposed 28-point plan, Tolbert said.
That plan includes Ukraine giving up territory, limiting the size of its army and agreeing not to join NATO, all in exchange for security guarantees and money toward reconstruction efforts.
Under that agreement, Russia largely avoids significant concessions and is provided post-war amnesty for its participants.
It’s unclear if any of those concessions have been changed since talks began.
President Donald Trump previously set a Thanksgiving Day deadline to reach a deal.
