CHICAGO (WGN) — At least seven teens were hospitalized on Friday following an overnight shooting in downtown Chicago.
According to police, the gunfire erupted just before 10 p.m. in the 100 block of North State Street, in the Loop.
Officers were on patrol in the area when they spotted a large group gathered on the sidewalk. Shortly after, they heard a gunshot being fired as the crowd fled the scene.
Officers quickly responded to the area and found seven teens who had been struck by gunfire.
According to police, six of the teens were boys between the ages of 13 and 17, while one was a 14-year-old girl. All of the teens injured were later hospitalized in good condition.
Currently, it is unclear what led to the gunfire and officers say no arrests have been made.
Chicago Ald. Brian Hopkins (2nd Ward) said on Friday that several officers were attacked with mace and stun guns and at least one officer was hospitalized amid the incident, but CPD has not yet confirmed those reports.
It was the second shooting to unfold in the Loop on Friday night. Nearby, at around 10:30 p.m., a man was killed and another was injured in a shooting.
The shootings come at a busy time in downtown Chicago. Just hours earlier, the city lit its Christmas tree in Millennium Park. Large crowds are expected downtown in the coming weeks as the holiday season gets underway.
