(NewsNation) — Revered film actress Diane Keaton — known for her roles in “The Godfather” trilogy, “Annie Hall,” for which she won an Oscar, “The First Wives Club,” and many others — has died, published reports say. She was 79.
Keaton first rose to fame in the 1970s thanks to her role as Kay Adams in “The Godfather” in 1972 and its equally successful 1974 sequel. Her award-winning turn in 1977’s “Annie Hall” was one of many projects she did with director Woody Allen.
In subsequent years, she co-starred in the romantic comedy “Something’s Gotta Give” with Jack Nicholson and, more recently, in the “Book Club” film series with contemporaries Jane Fonda and Candice Bergen. Keaton also directed and produced several projects.
Born Diane Hall in 1946 in Los Angeles, she adopted her mother’s maiden name, Keaton, for her stage career.
A family spokesperson told People Magazine there were no additional details available about Keaton’s death, and that her loved ones have asked for privacy.
The unexpected news was met with shock around the world.
“She was hilarious, a complete original, and completely without guile, or any of the competitiveness one would have expected from such a star. What you saw was who she was…oh, la, lala!,” Bette Midler said in a post on Instagram. She and Keaton co-starred in “The First Wives Club.”
Keaton is survived by her two children.
