(NewsNation) — Gamers have anxiously awaited the release of Grand Theft Auto VI, and last year, they got an answer as to when they might be finally able to play it: Fall 2025. But in May, developer Rockstar Games made a disappointing announcement: GTA VI was delayed and would come out May 26, 2026.

Now, speculation from industry insiders suggests another delay for GTA VI could be coming, and some gamers are responding to the news by trying to turn their heartbreak into cash through betting real money on Kalshi.

When do betters think GTA VI will come out?

Kalshi is a prediction market based in New York City that offers its users a chance to make bets based on the outcomes of future events, like whether the government shutdown will last more than 10 days, whether “The Fate of Ophelia” will be the most-streamed song on Taylor Swift’s new album and when GTA VI will actually be released.

“Kalshi allows users to buy and sell contracts, most of which are priced between 1 cent and $1, based on how likely people think an outcome is,” NewsNation’s Andrew Dorn writes. “Traders buy ‘yes’ or ‘no’ positions, and then when the event happens, the contract pays out to whoever was right.”

Right now, people can bet on release dates for GTA VI that range from before 2026 (which Kalshi estimates has a 2% chance of happening) to before June 2026 (70% chance), before August 2026 (79% chance) and before 2027 (88% chance).

As of the time this article was published, almost $800,000 has been wagered.

Gamer travels to Scotland for GTA VI answers

Gamers have wondered for years when GTA VI would be coming out, with some taking drastic action to learn its release date.

One YouTube and TikTok content creator even flew to Edinburgh, Scotland, tracked down GTA VI developers there and harassed them on the street, saying he was “sick and tired of waiting for answers.”

The developers quickly hurried away from the content creator and refused to answer any questions.

Dean Takahashi: GTA VI likely will embrace user-generated content

Legendary journalist Dean Takahashi sat down with NewsNation’s “Gamer Galaxy” podcast at gamescom in August to talk about some of the features GTA VI might have.

He predicts GTA VI will emphasize user-generated content much in the same way games like Roblox, Minecraft and Fortnite have.

“My guess about GTA VI is that they’re going to enlist the help of gamers,” he said. “Take-Two (GTA’s publisher) bought a couple of companies that do user-generated content. They make it easy, they provide all the tools necessary, for the players to set up their own levels, to set up their own minigames inside of the world of Grand Theft Auto. Instead of fighting against people who are trying to create copycats of GTA VI, they’re embracing them.”
