(NewsNation) — The popular “Call of Duty” franchise is finally making it to the big screen.
Paramount and Activision, which publishes the games, are partnering together for a live-action “Call of Duty” movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The movie studio will develop, produce and distribute the film in what Paramount CEO David Ellison calls a “dream come true,” while Activision will serve as a creative partner on the movie.
The “Call of Duty” film will be “designed to thrill its massive global fan base by delivering on the hallmarks of what fans love about the iconic series, while boldly expanding the franchise to entirely new audiences,” the companies said in a statement to THR Tuesday.
“The film will honor and expand upon what has made this franchise great in the first place, and we cannot wait to get started,” Rob Kostich, president of Activision, said in the statement.
The ‘Call of Duty’ franchise
The “Call of Duty” franchise is one of the world’s most popular video game series, with over 500 million copies sold across its various titles as of 2023.
The games are first-person shooters with a military setting. The “Call of Duty” games were originally set during World War II but have expanded to other settings, such as the Cold War, modern day and the future.
Microsoft, which owns the Xbox gaming system, closed its $69 billion deal to acquire Activision in October 2023, making it the largest video game acquisition in history.
The newest game in the series, “Call of Duty: Black Ops 7,” will be released in October.
There isn’t a projected release date yet for the movie.
