(NewsNation) — Dylan Mortensen, one of the surviving roommates of the University of Idaho murders, called Bryan Kohberger “a hollow vessel” and “something less than human,” addressing him directly in an emotional impact statement Wednesday.

“He is a body without empathy, without remorse. He chose destruction. He chose evil. He feels nothing,” she said as tears overcame her at Kohberger’s sentencing hearing.

“He tried to take everything from my friends, my safety, my identity, my future. He took their lives, but I will continue trying to be like them, to make them proud,” she said.

Mortensen was one of two who survived the night of November 13, 2022, when Koehberger brutally murdered Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin.

Kohberger took a plea deal, agreeing to serve four life sentences for the slayings. He confessed to killing them in court, avoiding a trial where prosecutors intended to seek the death penalty.
