BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KTVI) — Many animal shelters are at capacity during the summertime. That includes the Belleville Area Humane Society, which is looking for animal lovers to put on their cape and do a good deed by adopting a four-legged friend this weekend.

“Summertime, it’s kitten and puppy season,” Chelsea Erxleben, development manager at the Belleville Area Humane Society, said. “Shelters all across the nation are at capacity like ours. So, we have paired up with the Bissel Pet Foundation to lower prices on adoptions. Here at our shelter every animal that’s available for adoption; puppies, kittens, adult dogs, and cats.”

Since the Belleville Area Humane Society’s “Empty the Shelter” initiative began last week, they have adopted 74 pets to new homes. They’re asking the community to consider adopting a new family pet and help them clear out the shelter of just under 200 dogs and cats.

While “Superman” is big at the box office, it’s his sidekick Krypto that has charmed audiences, and increased inquiries into adoptions.

“We definitely had an increase in black cat adoptions after the Marvel Black Panther movie came out,” Erxleben said. “We did see an influx in that. There might be a correlation between the Superman movie that came out, but I think Emptying the Shelters is helping out as well.

You don’t really need a cape to adopt one of these animals that are spayed and neutered, just $25. But you will be considered a superhero to a fuzzy rescue.
