(NewsNation) — A transgender teenage girl was hospitalized with severe injuries, including a fractured jaw, after a fight broke out at a juvenile detention center in Washington, D.C.

She was being housed in a male unit at the city’s Youth Services Center, according to NBC’s Washington, D.C. affiliate WRC.

Data shows the center was over capacity by 17 people July 7, the day of the incident. Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services officials announced that a full review is underway.

“All classification and housing decisions at DYRS secure facilities shall be based on youths’ individualized needs, prioritizing the youth’s physical and emotional well-being,” according to the department’s LGBTQ policy shared with NBC News.

Five teens have since been charged in connection to the assault.

A separate fight that same day sent another teen to a hospital, though officials said the two incidents were unrelated.
