(NewsNation) — President Donald Trump on Sunday reflected on the first anniversary of the attempt on his life at a Butler, Pa., campaign rally, crediting God for protecting him and saying he tries not to think about the incident.

“God was protecting me, maybe because he wanted our country to do better,” a jovial-looking Trump told reporters at Joint Base Andrews when someone asked what was on his mind when he woke up Sunday, one year later.

“I have a job to do, so I don’t like to think about it much. It’s a little bit of a dangerous profession, being president, but I really don’t like to think about it too much. I think you’re better off not thinking about it.”

On July 13, 2024, Thomas Matthew Crooks climbed onto a building near a Trump campaign rally and fired several shots toward the president. Crooks was then killed by counter-snipers.

Trump’s right ear was grazed by a bullet. Two others were wounded, and Corey Comperatore, 50, was killed while he tried to shield his family. Trump on Sunday praised him as a hero.

“When gunfire erupted, Corey did not hesitate to protect his wife and two daughters,” he said in a prepared statement.
