(NewsNation) — The United States is ready to commit further to Israel’s cause should its conflict with Iran warrant such a response, according to retired four-star Gen. Wesley Clark.

Clark joined “Elizabeth Vargas Reports” in the aftermath of Iranian airstrikes on Israel in response to Israel’s attacks Thursday.

“We’re there. We’re ready to do more, if the decision is made and if the opportunity presents itself,” Clark said of the United States’ current stance. “President Trump has played it extremely well. … Now we’re certainly prepared to defend ourselves. We do have forces that could intervene and could do those strikes.

Clark praised President Donald Trump’s diplomatic approach thus far.

“But thus far, the Iranians have not gone after U.S. forces, or done anything in a terrorist way against U.S. facilities in Europe or the U.S. people in the United States.”

Clark acknowledged Iran can do so but expects them to “punch back for as long as it can without bringing in the United States.”

Iran announced Friday it had pulled out of nuclear talks with the United States, suspending them until further notice.
