(NewsNation) — Felipe Henao, the brother of Ana Knezevich Henao, and family attorney Adam Ingber joined NewsNation’s “CUOMO” on Monday to discuss the apparent death by suicide of David Knezevich, Knezevich Henao’s estranged husband, who was accused of kidnapping and killing her in Spain in February 2024.

Attorneys for Knezevich released a statement earlier Monday confirming his death in federal prison.

“The defense team is devastated to learn of this news. We sincerely hope that an appropriate and prompt investigation will be concluded,” it read.

Felipe Henao described the news of Knezevich’s death as heartbreaking.

“This is all a big tragedy for my sister and my family,” he told Chris Cuomo. “We had the naive hope he’d come clean and tell us what he did with her. Now, that’s not going to happen.”

Knezevich, a businessman from South Florida, was arrested in May 2024 at Miami International Airport. Prosecutors said he traveled to his native Serbia in January of that year amid a contentious divorce and financial disagreements with his wife. Once there, officials say he drove a rental car to Spain, where his wife was residing, and shortly after kidnapped and killed Knezevich Henao, carrying her body out of her Madrid apartment in a suitcase the evening of Feb. 2.

Her body has never been found.

“You can never lose hope,” Felipe Henao said on “CUOMO.” “Now that the authorities don’t have to focus on a trial, they can invest that time on finding where she is so we can mourn for her.”

Knezevich’s trial on kidnapping and murder charges was to have begun in June. Prosecutors are expected to drop the charges against Knezevich following his death.

“She made me who I am today,” Felipe Henao said in memory of his sister. “That’s why I love her. I miss her.”
