Police searching for child missing in Merrimack River in Massachusetts

LOWELL, Mass. (WPRI) — The Lowell Police Department and several other agencies are searching for a missing 4-year-old boy who was last seen in the Merrimack River.

Just before 6 p.m. Saturday, a 911 call was made saying the boy was in the water by the Western Canal in the area of 300 Arcand Drive and the river.

According to a release, a “preliminary indications are that the boy was quickly pulled by the current into the Merrimack River.”

The Lowell Police Drone Unit, the Lowell Fire Department Dive Team and boats, the Massachusetts State Police Airwing, Dive Team, and other units, UMass Lowell Police, and Environmental Police are all actively searching for the boy.

Firefighters in Dracut, Methuen and Lawrence have also searched the river downstream.

An investigation into how the boy ended up in the water is ongoing.
