(NewsNation) — A judge ruled documents in the Jodi Huisentruit case can be unsealed, saying they don’t contain information that would compromise the investigation.

Documents to be unsealed include the application for a search warrant, the endorsement for a search warrant, the search warrant itself and the return of the search warrant documents. An affidavit filed in support of the search warrant application will remain under seal.

Judge James Drew ruled for petitioners who requested the search warrant for GPS data from John Vansice’s 1999 Honda Civic and a 2013 GMC SUV be unsealed to provide closure to his family.

Vansice was considered a person of interest in Huisentruit’s 1995 disappearance.

Huisentruit, a news anchor in Mason City, Iowa, was reported missing when she failed to show up for her early morning shift as a news anchor. Her belongings, including a key and her red high heels, were found scattered in the parking lot of her apartment complex.

Police believe Huisentruit was abducted, and her family had her declared dead in 2001, but she has never been found.

Vansice, an acquaintance of Huisentruit’s, was believed to be the last person to see her alive and was considered a person of interest but never named as a suspect or charged in her case. He died in December 2024, leading to the request to unseal the documents.

Regarding the sealed affidavit, Drew said that because there is no statute of limitations for murder, the state’s interest in protecting the case outweighs public interest in disclosure.

The sealed affidavit is said to contain sensitive information about times and locations, specific items found at the scene of Huisentruit’s disappearance and other observations made by officers.

A motion for another hearing was denied.

If there is no appeal, the documents will be unsealed in 31 days.
