(NewsNation) — A North Carolina woman who lost her home to floods during Hurricane Helene received some good news this week, but many others are still waiting on the Feds for relief as President Donald Trump prepares to visit the region Friday.
Helene hit the mountain region, which sits hundreds of miles away from the coast, in September 2024, bringing devastating flooding to the area surrounding Asheville, North Carolina.
Residents who spoke with NewsNation’s Brian Entin expressed frustration with FEMA and the federal government’s response. They’re hoping that their fortunes will change with a new president — even people who aren’t fans of Donald Trump.
Hurricane survivor Christine Lopez said she doesn’t feel like her “little community” is “important to the nation” while discussing her frustrations with FEMA.
“Just having to wait; sit and wait,” she said. “Constantly going to check, and they’re like, ‘Yes, you’re in the system.’ ‘Yes, we’re working on it.’ ‘Yes, we’re trying this.’”
At least 133 deaths in six Southeastern states have been attributed to the storm that inflicted damage from Florida’s Gulf Coast to the Appalachian Mountains in Virginia.
